We also ran the video through Deepfake-o-meter, a deepfake detection by University at Buffalo’s Media Lab – which further confirmed that a lip-sync algorithm has been used to manipulate the movement of the lips in the faces seen in the video.

Earlier, we have also debunked a similar deep fake video of Sachin Tendulkar promoting an online gaming app. Further, we performed a reverse image search of the viral video, which led us to the original video uploaded on the YouTube channel of ‘Graham Bensinger’ on 22 December 2023. In this video, Kohli discusses his personal life and cricket, with no promotion of any gaming application. AI technologies like voice cloning could have been used to alter Kohli’s voice and lip movements to create the false impression of a gaming app promotion.
